Getting your running in your summer schedule and racing can be hard enough.
But factor in heat and humidity; and you're leisurely 5K or 5 miler for the weekend can turn disastrous.
Having run or being part of a few races in the last few weeks, whether its an early morning race or a race in the evening; you need to be sure to hydrate properly and continue to hydrate well after your race.
Here's a couple articles that I found recently with the same great advice ...
Coach Jenny, of RunnersWorld blog
Tips on Running in the Heat, RunnersWorld
Both are great resources, but remember the basics:
-don't run in the hottest part of the day
-hydrate before and after your run
-if you feel weak, don't push it - it's not worth the trip to the ER to get an IV
-lastly, be prepared.
This can be stashing water along your route, if you're planning to be out there a while or carry ID on you, so in an emergency you can get help if needed. Two years ago, my wife bought me the Road I.D. This is a velcro wrist or ankle band with your emergency contact info. For $20, its a great investment.
Safe running out there!
