to Boston?
Or the next Ironman? or Ultra-Event?
Nope. None of these. Its the time it takes to form new habits without it requiring a significant amount of effort. These behavior changes can be things that require a little bit of discipline such as drinking 8oz of water a day, or something that requires more effort like; starting a running program. But this is a MYTH.
Ask Google and you'll get a figure of somewhere between 21 and 28 days. In fact there's no solid evidence for this number at all. The 21 day myth may well come from a book published in 1960 by a plastic surgeon. Dr Maxwell Maltz noticed that amputees took, on average, 21 days to adjust to the loss of a limb and he argued that people take 21 days to adjust to any major life changes. Source: PSYBLOG
Can you change your running habits in just 21 days? The answer is No. The "21 days" timing is actually a myth. In fact, the study does show that change (depending on the habit and individual) can take as little as 18 days...and usually averages around 66 days.
To challenge yourself and change your running habits, try just One new behavior at a time, such as:
-go running at lunch
-get up in the am to run
Try it for 30 days. Before you know it, you'll integrate it into your training routine and be more consistent in your training, which is key as we draw nearer the fall racing calendar!
