Running new places

Traveling this week on business. So, of course took a pair of shoes and some running stuff to get in a run. After all, there's nothing better than getting your stiff legs off a cramped plane or out of the hotel in the morning for a few miles to loosen up your legs and clear your head for intense day ahead.

Being in a new state or location to explore is a great opportunity to find something new & different. New routes. New scenery. And then there's not having the pressure of makin' it to the expo for number pickup before closing or grabbing the sunrise shuttle to the starting line -- which helps makes the run a little smoother.

The only downer is that when you get to most places on business, you find that the highway metropolis that they set you up in - is only conducive to your location to the meeting -- and nothing else. I was bummed to be resigned to staying on the treadmill

Despite the city setting, I've found both Chicago and San Francisco to be much better to a early morning run, depending on what part of town they have you in. But being in a location on the outskirts of Cincinnati as I was this week, I was in strip mall heaven with a little touch of heavy construction & no shoulder, thrown in for good measure. My only real alternative was to do wind-sprints in the parking lot?!

Next time, will have to put more effort into checking out the location in advance to map a run in a new city, like Runner's World or MayMyRun.com

But at least I got myself up and ran.
