Labor Day Weekend...Saturday in the Park

Running in Holmdel Park (NJ) transports me back through time and back to my younger days running in HS. If you're looking for a great run -- then this is a great event for you!

Saturday in the Park, sponsored by Jersey Shore Running Club (JSRC), put on an event that not only was nostalgic, but a family-friendly event that will keep us coming back.

The course was the same grueling 3.1 mile cross-country course we ran in HS through wooded trails, around the bowl, and the open field finish line with spectators yelling and cheering. With one notable difference: no rain & fog!

If you ran XC in high school, Holmdel was the site of the NJ State XC Championships for Div I-IV + Parochial A & B. Every year we ran this meet in November and without fail, the weather was in 30's, rain and so much fog-you couldn't see across the
field. We stood huddled around a fireplace in the incredibly small starter's building (which is being torn down and rebuilt) and around the starting line with our tank tops and shorts freezing! The fog also did help to hide the magnitude of the hills and trails, but made footing difficult at best as the course marshalls yelled at you not to touch the other runners and "don't hold the rope!"

I've never seen such pristine conditions. No rain. No mud. No fog.
I was disappointed that I wasn't able to run-as this was a Women-only event, but have to say it was a great event.

Kudos to the JSRC for a great event. The kids event after the 5K, had staggered distances for each age, so the 5 & 6 year olds ran 200m run to the finish line. The kids received their own bib (each with #1), a finishers medal and a t-shirt (all for just $5). Not only would I highly recommend this event - but plan to attend more JSRC events in the future!!

I'm proud of my kids who ran their first event -- and have definitely caught the 'running bug' from their parents!

  1. I can't believe your kids are runners too!

Way to go - introducing them to your love of running! They're growing up so fast!
