There are many local 5K events for Memorial Day, 4th of July, Summer Extravaganzas for you to choose from.
So whether you're a '5K specialist' or a novice looking to log your first road race, there are some rules of the road to remember.

BE REALISTIC
Unless you're planning on finishing in the top 3 - don't start at the front of the pack.
Slower runners in the front end up cause problems for the faster runners lined up behind them. If you think you're going to run a slower pace, you can start on the sides - or line up near the back of the pack.
DON'T GO OUT TO FAST
Easier said then done.
HYDRATE
Make sure you get fluids before - during - and after the race. Be careful not to drink too much before and during, to avoid cramps. Depending on how hot it will be on the course, you'll have to adjust accordingly.
HAVE FUN!
You're out there to have a good time and have fun. And if it's your first race (or your first race of the season) or your 100th race -- enjoy it!
