Run In A Million Ticker

What a year!

As much change we experience in our lives; we've all found comfort at one time or another in the common thread and consistency of running.

Weddings. Funerals. Births. New jobs. New homes. Change schools. Working overtime.

You name it, we've experienced all of these life events at one point in our lives.

I can write about how many races I've run. The miles I've logged. But I won't -- not in this post....
However, in 2012, it was a year, not unlike other years has been filled with change. In the past year,
our family lost 6 members - 4 of them due to cancer. But none more devastating than the unexpected loss of my mother-in-law, Serene Murphy.

One year ago on January 4th, after experiencing severe headaches, my mother-in-law was rushed to the emergency room. The scans in the ER showed something we would have never expected. We learned that she had a brain tumor: stage 4, glioblastoma. Within two days of that diagnosis, she would undergo the first of three brain surgeries. What followed was a series of ups and downs with her treatment plan and lots of uncertainty.

So as I reflect back and think about the year past - I think not of the races run, nor the miles logged -- but the journey. Because of what we went through, the experience and short, temporary release that running brought during this time.

We spent a lot of time during this journey in NYC at NY Presbyterian Hospital while she went through her many procedures, surgerys and treatments. During that time we found brief respite from this horrific series events at the local pub, which ironically was Coogan's -- the only themed pub dedicated to Track & Field. Which just proves, everything comes full-circle.

We miss Serene terribly.
And dedicate this run, this year and all our running in her honor.

Serene Murphy, 2012
